Ever since the gold rush in the 1850s when a map was deviously created showing Melbourne as being closer to the gold fields than Geelong and subsequently causing it to become the capital city of the Colony of Victoria, Geelong has suffered living in the shadows of Melbourne. The rebranding of the City of Greater Geelong in 2000 sought to address this long standing shadowing by positioning the city with the national focus, Geelong Australia.
